Create a Plan of Study

Completing your plan of study...

Before a student completes 17 hours of graduate coursework they are expected to have a Plan of Study on file at the graduate college.  The document simply lists the courses you plan to take to complete the requirements for graduation.  The MSETM office will assist you in filing your plan. The Plan of Study Worksheet will be helpful in this process. Begin by making  a list of the courses you have taken or wish to take using the complete list of MSETM Program Courses.  Keep in mind that it is not often possible to predict what will be offered and what you may be interested in two or three years ahead of time.  Don't worry about making changes to your plan.  We will re-file an updated copy during your last semester.

Use the Plan of Study worksheet  to help you calculate the curriculum requirements.  Once the above steps are completed, rename the files using your last name and first initial (ex: JohnsonB.xls) and email a copy  to MSETM Assistant Director, Brenda Johnson.  Your plan of study will be reviewed and a copy with any necessary revisions or corrections will be sent back to you.   When we arrive at a workable plan a copy of the worksheet will be held by the MSETM office and an official form with be completed.

After the official form is complete we will forward it to the student for review.  If everything appears correct, the student will sign the form and return it to the MSETM office.  The MSETM office will then collect the necessary signatures and forward it to the Graduate College.  Any changes in the plan that are made after it has been sent to the graduate college, must be approved by your advisor (Brenda Johnson - brenda.johnson@Okstate.edu) so that revisions can be made on the official plan of study prior to graduation.

Plan of Study Checklist:

Before submitting your Plan of Study for review please run it through this checklist.

1) Check your "Creative Component Courses" for correct sequence.

ETM 5111, ETM 5121 an ETM 5131 are the only three courses required of all students in the program.  ETM 5111 is typically taken at the earliest opportunity in the program (usually the 1st semester).  ETM 5121 and ETM 5131 must be taken in sequence during the last two semesters of the program.   Both ETM 5121 and ETM 5131 are offered every semester (including summer).

The bottom line...You should enroll in ETM 5121 during the second to the last  full semester of your program and ETM 5131 during the last full semester.

2) Final Semester

From the Graduate College: The graduate college requires all graduating students to be enrolled in at least 2 credit hours during the semester in which they plan to graduate.

Clarification: In the MSETM program students should try to enroll in ETM 5131 during their last semester. Since this course is a one-credit hour course, you must enroll in at least 1 other credit hour during that semester. Since there is a project involved with ETM 5131 it may be tempting to try to take just that course – but that is not an acceptable plan.
The bottom line…You should try to enroll in at least 2 credits during your last semester.

3) Continuous Enrollment

The OSU catalog reads:

“A graduate student must maintain continuous enrollment…Continuous enrollment can be met with six credit hours during each 12 month period or 2 credit hours in each of the fall, summer and spring semesters.”

Clarification: This means you should enroll in at least 2 credits each semester or a total of six within one year.  A "year” equals three consecutive semesters starting from the first semester in which you were enrolled. For example, students who first enrolled in Summer 01 are required to enroll in six ours total during Summer 01, Fall 01, Spring 02.

The bottom line... You should try to enroll in at least 6 credits per year.  If you fall short, we can ask for you to be reinstated. As long as you are in good standing this won't be a problem

4) 10 year rule

The OSU catalog reads:

"Courses taken more than 10 years prior to actual graduation will not be accepted on a plan of study without a formal request from the advisory committee and approval of the Graduate Faculty Council."

Clarification:  Transfer credits older taken more than 10 years prior to the beginning of the semester you graduate will not be accepted on a plan of study.

The bottom line... Example: If you are graduating in Spring 2008 (May) the oldest course you could transfer in would be one that started in June 1998.

5) Time Limit

The OSU catalog reads:

“Students are expected to complete the requirements for the master’s degree within seven years from first enrollment after admission to the Master’s degree program.”

Clarification:

This means that students have 21 consecutive semesters in which to complete the degree requirements (32 hours in the case of MSETM).  Each year contains three semesters: Spring, Summer and Fall.  For example if a student is admitted to the program in Fall 1999 he/she must complete all requirements by the end of the Summer 2004 semester.

The bottom line...

If you were admitted and began taking classes in ...

You must complete the requirements by...
Spring 01

End of Fall 2008
Summer 01
End of Spring 2008
Fall 2001
End of Summer 2008
Spring 2002
End of Fall 2009
Summer 2002
End of Spring 2009
Fall 2002
End of Summer 2009
Spring 2003
End of Fall 2010
Summer 2003
End of Spring 2010

Fall 03

End of Summer 2010 and so on...
